Chalk Mine Hollow at Eastport, MS on Pickwick Lake

Have you ever heard of the Chalk Mines in Eastport, MS on the Pickwick Lake? Well, last weekend we did some major exploring as well as boating.  A few of us had visited the mines last year, but this year we planned it and had the entire gang there for the track. Katie and Ryan and their boys came to stay with us on Saturday.

We had initially planned on going to lunch before hand at Gilligan's, but our boat troubles interfered with that idea.  So, we had a quick sandwich at the house with the Hughes’ and their “Special Bread”. Let me give a shout out to the Hughes Family, our house guests for the weekend”, for sharing their special sandwich bread. The Naifeh’s wouldn’t have eaten lunch that day if it weren’t for your generosity. Yes...you had to be there...

We gathered up our dozen or so flashlights and set out for Eastport.

You should read up on the history of the Mines, it is pretty neat.  (For those of you that haven't realized this yet, any of my words that show up in light blue are links. So if you click on those words it will connect you to a website that relates to those words.)  The mines are located in the first cove past the Eastport Marina on the right.

The first ones to pull into the cove (Above the Line and Me and Lori on the Sea Doo), were welcomed by none other than a WATER MOCASSIN! YUCK! It was a baby and he swam on his merry way pretty quickly. Still, not the best feeling in the world! We walked about 200 yards on a beaten down trail to the entrance of the mine.

We all went in, one at a time, with our string and crumbled cookies in tow, just in case we got “turned around” on the inside! Lori and Ally were the lead ones in charge of making our "Hansel and Gretel Path"! It is a really neat experience! COLD COLD COLD which feels GREAT to a menopausal woman like me! The kids said, “Mom, we should bring you in here all of the time-you might not be so miserable”! It is not at all what you would expect. It has tall ceilings so you can stand up and the pathways are nice and wide so you do not get claustrophobic at all.  There is graffiti all over the walls from college students mainly from Ole Miss.

We took lots of pictures, cooled off, took in some of the painting on the walls, and hit the trail back to the boat. It was a neat little treat for us on the water that day. You should check it out sometime! Yes, I REALLY was there even though there isn't s SINGLE picture of me!
The Three Amigos, Clowning Around As Usual...
Possibly the sweetest picture EVER! The entire time we were in the Mine, Will NEVER let go of Steven's shirt...PRICELESS!

A SHOUT OUT TO THE MOMS!

And to The other Dads!
